Daily Photo News and Journalism Roundup for Friday, July 24, 2020
A daily compilation of photography, journalism, and content creation news and resources written or curated by Sean Sosik-Hamor. Not everything posted is breaking news but is something that piqued his interest while researching or fact-checking other stories. Daily roundups may be briefer on days where Sean is working on other stories.
“Captain Portland’s” Fundraiser for Street Medics
The last time I was in Portland was a little over two years ago so the above photo is totally unrelated. But this story is about as Cyberpunk as it gets.
Christopher David, the Navy veteran beaten by federal agents in Portland, has started a GoFundMe fundraiser for the Portland street medics that provide medical treatment to journalists and protesters that are injured by police and federal agents.
Chris David, a disabled Veteran, and graduate of the United States Naval Academy felt the need to speak truth to power and tried to engage in conversation with federal officers in Portland, asking if any of them were prior military and recall their oath of office to support the Constitution.
The reply he received came in the form of baton blows and mace to his face. Even though his hand is broken and he has medical expenses, he is declining any fundraising for himself.
Chris would like to give back to the street medics that took care of him when he sustained his injuries. Funds will initially go to street medics based in Portland. If the campaign exceeds expectations, street medics in other cities will benefit as well as food banks.
America Reimagined Documentary Project Launched
I’m a sucker for any form of visual storytelling project. Especially when the project gives a platform for student photographers and photojournalists to showcase their work and access to mentors.
[Boyd, Kentucky, July 18, 2020] — Boyd’s Station and American Reportage are proud to announce the launch of AMERICA REIMAGINED, a curation and archival project aimed at showcasing the work of emerging photojournalists and preserving the images and narratives that offer an intimate look at the ways Americans are grappling with, and adjusting to, this disruptive moment in history. AMERICA REIMAGINED documents how life reacts and evolves with each new challenge – from the COVID-19 pandemic which pushed the country into its homes and social distancing to the fight for social justice which reunited millions in protest and solidarity in streets across the country.
AMERICA REIMAGINED is Boyd’s Station’s innovative effort to engage, motivate, mentor and give voice to emerging photojournalists documenting dramatic changes in daily life across America in 2020 and beyond. The project’s mission is to document a country in transition and record the next chapter of history.
Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund
Adobe has established the $1M Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund to help visual creators stay on track and achieve their dreams.
Each year we get an incredible number of applicants to the Adobe Creative Residency program. This year, in response to the extensive need in the creative community for monetary support and career guidance, we’ve decided to expand the program. In addition to the new Creative Residents this year, we’re excited to announce a $1 million Creative Residency Community Fund. This fund will enable us to support many more creators by funding their projects and hiring them for Adobe-commissioned projects.
The motto of the Creative Residency program is “Create. Share. Activate. Empower.” As always, the creators we select will be passionate about creating personally fulfilling work, sharing their journeys, and activating fellow creatives to craft the careers they want by empowering them with knowledge.
NPPA, NPPF, and the (Unrelated) NPF
I’ve been a member of the National Press Photographers Association for almost a decade but I only recently started getting acquainted with the National Press Photographers Foundation.
The National Press Photographers Foundation Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is charged with advancing photojournalism through education and awarding scholarships and fellowships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated ability or promise in the field of visual journalism.
The NPPF is also the place to make a tax-deductible donation to the work of the NPPA.
I’ve also been meaning to add the unrelated National Press Foundation news feed to my RSS reader.
The National Press Foundation is a 501(c)(3) whose primary mission is educating journalists on the complex issues of the day and training them on the latest digital tools. The foundation recognizes and encourages excellence in journalism through its awards and programs.
How To Protect Your Rights as a Photographer in the Modern World
PetaPixel started this page five years ago and it hasn’t seen any major updates since. But it’s still a great starter guide to knowing your rights as a photographer or photojournalist. It’s been on my todo list for a long time to create an updated version of this article.
In today’s society, it seems that no knowledge is more prudent for photographers to learn than the rights of themselves and their photographs. Here at PetaPixel, we wanted to create a comprehensive one-stop guide to your constitutional rights to capture the world around you and what you are permitted to do with those photos.
